May 13-22 are the dates for the contest, with May 12 (Saturday) being the official practice day. Note that these dates are a departure from the traditional Tuesday through Thursday schedule of the past.  This will be a Sunday through Tuesday contest. Concurrently, a Sports Class only contest will be held Sunday May 13th through Saturday May 19th.

Pending an affirmative ruling by the Contest Board, standard class gliders competing in the Nationals will scored according to regional rule 11.2.3.6 which provides for an added 2% adjustment.

Tows are available at Mifflin prior to the contest for those interested in additional practice. There will be a limit of 55 gliders with the 2011 pilot ranking list used 60 days before the first contest day (14-March-2012) to select entrants in the event of over subscription. This is also the date for which the rules allow for a “late” entry surcharge.

The entry fee is $685 with $150 deposit required with application to hold an entry position

In the event of an oversubscribed contest requiring the use of the pilot ranking list to select pilots, reverse seeding will apply to 5 positions in the Sports Class.

Please read the Mifflin County Airport Glider Contest Briefing (last updated 11-May-11).

The "Ridge Running" page was last updated 17-Nov-2011 (changes marked in yellow).

Either a glider mounted ELT (121.5 MHz or 406 MHz) or SPOT tracking device is required. A PLB (personal locator beacon) is not a substitute for an ELT and/or SPOT. Both the SPOT and the recently devalued 121.5 MHz ELT system offer a chance for location of an incapacitated pilot, while the PLB does not.

You must complete your on-site registration before flying on Saturday. On-site registration (collection of balance of fees due, verification of registration paperwork, collection of signatures, pickup of registration packets) will be held:

In the area of social activities we hope to maintain the tradition of Mifflin as a “user friendly” place to fly and to hang out afterwards. The seasoned volunteer corps remains eager to make this another happy, first class event.

Contest Manager Iris Striedieck The Mifflin Trophy is awarded each year for the longest flight* made during the contest (excluding guest entrants). The trophy was created by the Mifflin County Airport Authority in 2008 as a way of supporting the soaring competitions that have been held at the airport since 1990.  All the design and fabrication of the trophy was done by members of the Authority who applied the skills and resources of their private occupations to provide this award. The winning pilot receives a winner’s plaque while the trophy remains at the airport with the winner’s names added each year.

* Starting in 2010, the longest flight will be determined after applying the SSA Sports Class handicap for the aircraft and using the unadjusted handicap weight.
